DAY 143

NEW ENGLAND & THE CANADIAN MARITIMES

Day 143 • We didn’t get very far today. We timed our departure so we would arrive at the first bridge of the day’s reopening. That went well. We then had to boat in place against the current along with everyone else for an hour-plus as we waited for our turn to enter the lock. Once inside, we encountered the rudest lock attendant ever. After locking through, we had one more bridge opening to make before calling it quits for the day and tying up to the free dock. Several others ended up doing the same, filling the dock. Later we noticed a sailboat looking for a place to go, so we invited the couple to raft up to us. They are from Bern, Switzerland, and were thrilled to find out that we were headed for its namesake city in North Carolina. We had a nice chat, and then we went for a nature walk and checked out the nearby marsh.
