DAY 56

NEW ENGLAND & THE CANADIAN MARITIMES

Day 56 • Origami’s captain is very safety-conscious (maybe obsessively so). He constantly monitors the weather, tides, and currents. We don’t leave the boat alone during high winds despite having never dragged anchor.

Today was windy and rainy. We slept in and lazily worked on planned boat projects. Later, we set up Camp Cozy. A new boat arrived and anchored too close for comfort, even though other spots were available. Evan felt he should say something but didn’t really want to be that guy, plus they left on their dinghy right away.

Unable to rest, Evan was up monitoring the positions of other boats and our anchor line, which had given us a nice half wrap. While tending to the issue, we noticed the unmanned sailboat getting closer. The change of tides had placed them directly in our orbit. Next thing we know, they are a foot off the stern, tangling in our davit lines. Evan, dressed in his cat pants, fought to repeatedly fend them off with a boat hook. Luckily, a neighbor rushed over in their dinghy and pushed the sailboat out of our way as we pulled anchor and moved locations. We don’t think they are actively dragging now, but I’m sure we’ll spend the night checking to be sure.
